When considering resignation, it is important to first consult with your supervisor at work.
In Japan, it is common practice not to submit resignation documents out of the blue, but rather to first inform your supervisor verbally that you are “considering resignation,”
and then proceed with the resignation process in accordance with company policies.
It is common to give at least one month’s notice of your intention to resign, but since company employment regulations may specify a different deadline, be sure to check this in advance.
Upon resignation, you may receive the following documents from your company:
・Letter of Resignation
・Withholding Tax Statement
・Certificate of Loss of Social Insurance Eligibility
・Certificate of Resignation
Please keep these documents in a safe place, as they will be necessary for changing jobs and for tax and insurance procedures.
Additionally, if you resign, you must submit a “Notification regarding affiliated (contracted) organization” to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan within 14 days.
Failure to complete this procedure may affect the renewal or change of your status of residence, so please be careful.
Since resigning is a major decision, it is advisable to consult with your new employer or your Registered Support Organization in advance rather than proceeding on your own.
