The Lump-sum withdrawal is a system that allows foreign nationals who have paid into the Employees’ Pension Insurance in Japan to receive a portion of those contributions when they return to their home country.
You can apply if you meet certain conditions; for example, one of the main requirements is that you have paid into the Employees’ Pension Insurance for at least six months.
You must apply within two years of leaving Japan by mailing the required documents to the Japan Pension Service.
[Eligibility Requirements]
・You must not be a Japanese national.
・You must have already left Japan.
・You must not be receiving an old-age pension or disability pension.
*If you plan to re-enter Japan, you may not be eligible.
[Main Documents Required for Application]
・Lump-Sum Withdrawal Payment Claim Form
・Copy of your passport
・Document showing your pension number
・Bank account information in your name
It takes approximately 4 to 6 months for the payment to be processed, and income tax will be withheld from the payment amount.
However, you may be able to recover some or all of this amount by filing a tax refund claim with the tax office.
Confirming your pension number and preparing copies of the necessary documents before returning to your home country will help ensure a smooth process upon your return.
If you have any concerns, it is advisable to consult with your accepting company (employer) or Registered Support Organization before leaving Japan.
